DIY of the month – On-the-Go Games

Keep your kids busy with these DIY on-the-go games! With 4 games to choose from you can keep them busy while driving, camping or just about anywhere. Attach hook &loop tape to the pieces if you intend to use this in vehicles so they won’t slide around and get lost.

Binder

Materials

• Main Felt: 0.3m Medium weight felt
• 2x D-rings
• Assorted felt squares
• Beacon Craft-Tak

Instructions

1. From your main felt cut 1 Rectangle 20″x12.5″ and cut 2 Strips 1″x 12.5″

2. Fold the rectangle in half short sides together and mark the middle.

3. Thread 1 strip through the D rings and glue down onto the middle you just marked.

4. Topstitch around the edges of the strip to secure. Flip over and glue the other 1″ strip down the middle, covering the stitching.

5. Using the Alphabet and square pattern cut out a name or phrase for the front cover. Glue each letter to a contrasting square.

6. Glue to the front cover.

Checkers

Materials

• 1 Black Felt Square & 1 Red Felt Square
• Hook & loop
• Buttons 16x Black & 16x Red

Instructions

1. Using the checkerboard pattern cut out 32 Squares of red felt and the pocket pieces.

2. Position the red squares on the black felt to create a checkerboard in alternating order, for example: 1 square, 1 space, 1 square, 1 space, 1 square, 1 space, 1 square, 1 space. Use craft glue to secure pieces.

3. Using the pocket pattern mark and attach hook & loop. Pin pocket onto the bottom of the page and topstitch around edges.

4. Match pocket flap to pocket and topstitch the top edge. Put 16 red buttons in one pocket and the remaining 16 black buttons in the opposite pocket.

Building Blocks

Materials

• Assorted Felt Squares

Instructions

1. Using the pattern provided cut out numerous shapes from the coloured felt.

2. Use 1 felt square as the page and the shapes will naturally stick to it.

Memory Game

Materials

• Assorted felt squares
• Quilting Cotton: 0.2m of “Monster Lab” Collection

Instructions

1. Use “Monster Lab” quilting collection or a quilting cotton that has distinctive shapes or characters. Using the backing pattern cut out 6 different characters or shapes. Repeat so you have a pair of each character or shape. Using the backing pattern cut out 12 backings from the felt squares. Use the front pattern to cut out 12 fronts from the felt squares.

2. Take 1 backing piece and glue it to a character, then glue a front on top of the character. Repeat until all 12 are finished.

3. Use 1 felt square as the page and the shapes will naturally stick to it. Flip over pieces 1 at a time to make a match.

Tic-Tac-Toe

Materials

• Main Fabric: 0.3m
• Quilting Cotton
• Ribbon: 0.5m
• Hook & loop
• Buttons 6x Blue 6x Yellow
• Felt Square

Instructions

1. Cut 2 rectangles 9.5″x12.5″ in the main fabric. Place the rectangles right sides together and stitch around leaving a 4″ gap to turn right side out.

2. Make sure felt square measure 9″x12″, if not then cut to fit. Insert felt square inside your cotton.

3. Edgestitch around to close the opening. Cut ribbon into 4 pieces 5″ long and position in a grid on the cotton, topstitch in place.

4. Cut out your pocket pattern pieces from cotton. Fold pocket flap seams in 1/4″ and topstitch. Fold the top of pocket down 1/4″ and topstitch.

5. Using pocket pattern mark and attach hook & loop. Position pocket onto the bottom of the page and topstitch down the middle to create separate pockets. Match pocket flap to pocket and topstitch to hold in place.

6. Put 6 buttons of 1 colour in one pocket and the remaining 6 of another colour in the opposite pocket.

Assemble the Binder

Cut 2 small strips of ribbons per page. Fold in half. Mark on your pages where the D-rings are. Stitch or glue the ribbon to the pages. Tie ribbon around D-rings and remove them as needed.
