Cutting Instructions

Please note: All strips are cut across the width of fabric (WOF) from selvedge to selvedge unless otherwise noted. Fabric J & K are directional fabrics, this will leave an excess of fabric once cut.
Please cut in the order listed.

From Fabric A cut:
(1) Planchette Top
(1) 4″ x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(6) 4″ x 4″ squares
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(1) 5 5/8” x 5 5/8” square

From Fabric B cut:
(1) 55 1/2” x 40 1/2” rectangle
(1) Planchette Circle
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(1) 5 5/8” x 5 5/8” square

From Fabric C cut:
(1) 4″ x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(6) 4″ x 4″ squares
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares

From Fabric D cut:
(1) 4″ x WOF strip. Sub cut:
(10) 4″ x 4″ squares
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strip. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(2) 4″ x 4″ squares

From Fabric E, F, G cut:
(1) 4″ x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(6) 4″ x 4″ squares
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(1) 5 5/8” x 5 5/8” square

From Fabric H & I cut:
(1) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(4) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(1) 5 5/8” 5 5/8” square

From Fabric J cut:
(3) 3″ x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(28) 3″ x 3″ squares
(5) 4″ x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(42) 4″ x 4″ squares
(3) 6 1/8” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(14) 6 1/8” x 6 1/8” squares
(2) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(12) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares
(2) 60 1/2” Length of Fabric (LOF) x 3″ strips
(4) 5 1/2” x 25 3/4” strips – sew the strips together end to end and sub cut:
(2) 5 1/2” x 45 1/2” strips
(1) Planchette Shadow
(1) Planchette Half Circle

From Fabric K cut:
(2) 55 1/2” LOF x 3″ strips
(2) 6 5/8” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(7) 6 5/8” x 6 5/8” square
(4) 3″ x 23 1/4” strips – sew the strips together end to end and sub cut:
(2) 5 1/2” x 50 1/2” strips

Use remaining Fabric for binding

From Fabric L cut:
(2) 6 1/2” x WOF strips. Sub cut:
(8) 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” squares

Block Assembly

Seam Allowance: 1/4″

Half Square Triangles

  1. Place (1) A 6 1/2” right sides together with (1) J 6 1/2

2. Sew 2 channels down the middle

3. Cut down middle and press open. Trim to 5 1/2” x 5 1/2

Repeat steps 1-3, referring to the above image.

Economy Block

  1. Take (2) J 6 1/8” cut on the diagonal to make (4) triangles. Mark the center of the long edge.

2. Take (1) K 6 5/8” cut corner to corner to make 4 triangles. Mark the center of the outside edge.

3. Take (1) A 5 5/8″, mark the center of each side.

4. Match the center of (1) K to one of the center marks on (1) A. Stitch to secure. Repeat until all sides of A are sewn.

5. Match the center of (1) J to the top corner of A. Stitch to secure. Repeat until all sides of KA are sewn. Trim to 10 1/2” x 10 1/2

Repeat steps 1-5, referring to the above image.

Ribbon Star Block

  1. Place (1) A 4″, right sides together with (1) J 4″

2. Sew 2 channels down the middle

3. Cut down middle and press open, trim to 3″

Repeat steps 1-3, until there are (12) A/J

4. Take (4) 3 1/4″ J and (12) A/J to make the ribbon star block.

Repeat steps 1-4, referring to the above image

Planchette Assembly

Referring to the above diagram as a guide for pattern placement, use your favorite method to stitch the applique planchette to Fabric B (1) 55 1/2” x 40 1/2” rectangle.

Quilt Layout

Using the diagram sew half square triangles together to make (1) column. Repeat with remaining half square triangles to make a second column.

  • Use quilt layout for block location
  • Sew blocks and rows together to create quilt top
  • Layer and quilt as desired
  • Bind as desired
  • Arrows indicate fabric direction
